Job Intro

We are Fermtech, an Oxford-based biotech company who are driven by the application of biotechnology to solving the climate crisis. We focus on taking state of the art fermentation technologies and applying them to low-cost production of food.

We are looking for a Bioreactor Scientist to help us design and operate our next-level precision fermentation bioreactors. This will involve the application of cutting-edge technologies such as continuous flow, solid-state, and bio-film reactor systems.

Bioreactor Scientist

A scientist with extensive knowledge and skills in bioreactor engineering and fermentation to play a pivotal role in expanding our capabilities to produce food proteins at our Oxford Research site. A successful candidate would help to design an automated bioreactor system for use with fungal fermentation technology. This position will involve working in close collaboration with other researchers to ensure commercial production of high-quality food protein.

Skills & Experience

• Ph.D or MSc in bioprocessing, bio-fermentation or bioengineering;
• At least 3 years of experience with bioreactors, bioprocessing and fermentation;
• The ability to calculate and optimize the fungal growth kinetic parameters (such as pH, dissolved oxygen, etc.), in addition to the selection of formulations that improve the protein production;
• Ability to design and construct 10-100L bioreactor systems;
• Proven track record for solving complex scientific problems and delivering high quality results, as demonstrated through an excellent publication history, supported by evidence of major individual contributions;
• Very strong verbal and written communication and team working skills.

Key responsibilities

• Ability to design and execute complex experiments, including bioreactor design and optimization;
• Champion and leverage cutting edge engineering tools and fermentation technology;
• Effectively distil complex, multi-dimensional data and results into concise concepts and clearly propose strategic and experimental actions;
• Proactively communicate and work highly effectively within and between teams;
• Collaborate extensively and work on shared projects with other scientific colleagues and cross-functional teams.
