Responsible for an established team of experienced industry and technical experts, your role will be to lead the discovery and development of innovative antibacterial drugs and the respective translational research. The role also entails taking responsibility as project champion in research programs conducted either in- house or with external collaboration partners from initiation of the program to the support of clinical trials as well as acting as the representative for preclinical pharmacology in development project teams.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the bacteriology research group comprising a team of experienced scientists and technical experts;
  • Provide translational antibacterial expertise (both strategic and operational) to support AiCuris' antibacterial research and development programs, and to expand our drug discovery pipeline;
  • Identify new drug development programs based on commercial and scientific opportunities, and ensure that existing programs are moved forward from hit-to-lead and lead optimization stages to preclinical candidates in a timely, scientifically sound, and business-oriented manner;
  • Steer scientific projects, guide and motivate within and across teams, and manage the overall tasks and timelines;
  • Closely collaborate with other departments such as chemistry and preclinical development, as well as external partners and CROs;
  • Act as antibacterial expert representing nonclinical pharmacology in internal research and development project teams;
  • Provide expert input to clinical research and business development;
  • Assess the competitor landscape as well as external projects within due diligences;
  • Represent bacteriology research at scientific conferences as well as in business or regulatory meetings.

Skills and qualification

  • PhD in microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, human biology, or related fields;
  • 10+ years of experience in research in major pharma or biotech company or respective academic environment is mandatory; in vivo experience (FELASA-C or equivalent) and expertise in relevant infection models is a must;
  • Deep understanding of the antibacterial drug development processes as well as business aspects covering both conventional antibiotics and novel strategies (e.g., peptides and lysins), competitor landscape, medical need, and commercial opportunities;
  • Very solid knowledge of translational research with regard to antibacterial drug evaluation as well as deep understanding of pharmacology, PK/PD, and clinical microbiology;
  • Long term experience in supervising scientific work as well as preparing scientific and regulatory documents and presenting to different stakeholders;
  • Proven leadership experience, team working and innovative thinking personality;
  • Very strong organizational and analytical skills, ability to efficiently evaluate, to prioritize, and to handle multiple project tasks strategically;
  • Fluent in English, German language skills would be an advantage.
