Associate Principal Scientist - Mammalian Cell Culture

Associate Principal Scientist - Mammalian Cell Culture

Lonza

Slough, United Kingdom

At our Slough site, you’ll join a growing R&D team developing next‑generation mammalian cell culture technologies that help shape the future of biologics manufacturing. This is a hands‑on laboratory role where your scientific expertise directly contributes to innovative bioprocess solutions for global customers.

What you will do

  • Design, execute, and analyse complex mammalian cell culture experiments to support development and optimisation of upstream bioprocesses.
  • Set up, operate, and maintain lab‑scale bioreactors (3–10 L) to evaluate fed‑batch and perfusion processes.
  • Work closely with upstream R&D colleagues to plan and deliver non‑routine bioreactor studies that drive process improvements.
  • Perform routine mammalian cell culture activities, including media preparation, cell revival, and subculture.
  • Generate high‑quality experimental data, contribute to study plans and technical reports, and prepare presentations for internal stakeholders.
  • Support adherence to laboratory procedures, safety assessments, and good documentation practices.
  • Contribute to general laboratory operations and housekeeping activities as required.

What we are looking for

  • Experience in mammalian cell culture and upstream bioprocess development, ideally within biopharma, biotechnology, or a related scientific environment.
  • Hands‑on expertise with lab‑scale bioreactors and monitoring of key bioprocess parameters.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex experimental data.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary R&D team and manage multiple experimental workflows.
  • Clear and structured communication skills, including scientific writing and presentation.
  • A degree in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., biotechnology, bioprocessing, biological sciences) or equivalent experience.
  • A proactive, organised, and safety‑focused approach to laboratory work.
