Senior Scientist - Pilot Team - Operations

Lonza

Slough, United Kingdom

The Manufacturing, Science, and Technology (MSAT) Pilot team is seeking a Senior Scientist to join a dedicated pilot batch execution group responsible for supporting the technical transfer of new and existing downstream (DSP) processes into the pilot plant. In this role, you will plan and coordinate all batch execution logistics while providing hands-on technical support for DSP operations, working closely with external customers and cross-functional teams to ensure processes are suitable for scale-up to cGMP manufacturing. This position offers the chance to build practical expertise in biotech processes within a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment—ideal for individuals who thrive under dynamic conditions. Please note that the role involves approximately 70% hands-on laboratory work and 30% desk-based planning activities.

What you will do:

  • Prepare process descriptions and batch records for pilot batch execution, including ordering raw materials for DSP operations while working closely with Process Development, R&T, and NPI scientists
  • With training, prioritize and contribute to daily team tasks such as equipment setup, operation, and use of process analytical technologies
  • Ensure transfer documentation is written and followed to meet project deadlines and customer requirements
  • Build relationships with Process Development and R&T peers and contribute to project meetings and discussions
  • Use existing knowledge to resolve routine process issues and suggest improvements
  • Perform structured data analysis to identify trends and support NPI scientists in preparing process summary reports
  • Work independently to write and implement departmental EHS protocols and lead continuous improvement activities to reduce cost and increase yield

What we are looking for:

  • BSc/BEng degree in a scientific field or equivalent, plus experience in industry or relevant academic setting
  • Understanding of downstream (DSP) operations and aseptic work, ideally in manufacturing/biotech
  • Experience with column chromatography and filtration techniques used in biotech technical operations
  • Knowledge of technical transfer processes within manufacturing or pilot plant environments
  • Strong interpersonal skills, structured data analysis capability, and ability to write reports, protocols, and SOPs
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and ability to work independently within DSP operations
