We are seeking a talented and motivated Scientist Organic Chemistry to join our dynamic R&D Bioconjugation team. In this role, you will contribute to the design, synthesis, and characterization of novel payloads, bioconjugation technologies, and linkers that enable innovative therapeutic modalities. You will work in a multidisciplinary environment, collaborating closely with colleagues in chemistry, biology, and analytical sciences to advance our research programs.

The prime objective of the R&D group at Synaffix/Lonza is to provide best-in-class targeted delivery technologies, i.e. development of protein conjugation technologies, linkers and payloads. General focus is on cytotoxic ADCs, however, other modalities are also being pursued, such as immuno-oncology, targeted gene therapy, neurodegenerative disease and autoimmune disease. A Scientist Organic Chemistry will play a key role in realizing and giving direction to Synaffix’ R&D agenda.

What you will do:

  • Design and execute multi-step and complex organic syntheses, including linker and payload chemistry relevant to bioconjugates;
  • Apply a broad understanding of synthetic and/or medicinal chemistry to develop and optimize novel chemical entities;
  • Supervise, mentor, and motivate research associates to achieve project objectives;
  • Plan and manage projects effectively, ensuring scientific excellence, quality, and timely delivery of results;
  • Generate and interpret experimental data to support project decisions;
  • Continuously evaluate and incorporate scientific literature to solve challenges and advance technology;
  • Act as a team leader, fostering a collaborative and result-driven working environment;
  • Identify risks and opportunities in ongoing projects and propose practical solutions.

What we are looking for:

  • PhD or MSc degree in Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, or a related discipline;
  • Proven experience in multi-step synthesis and purification of complex molecules;
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Experience with bioconjugation chemistry, linker design, or ADC (antibody–drug conjugate) technology is a strong plus;
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate others in a research setting;
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
