Scientist - Cell Expression Technologies

Scientist - Cell Expression Technologies

Lonza

Cambridge, United Kingdom

The role:

We are recruiting a Scientist with a background in cell expression technologies to join our R&D Cell Engineering and CLC group at our Cambridge site. This is an outstanding opportunity to be at the forefront of developing next-generation, industrially relevant cell expression platforms.

This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role in advancing expression systems and services for the efficient production of complex therapeutic proteins and contributing to world-class scientific breakthroughs!

Key responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the delivery of new CHO-based mammalian expression hosts and vector systems for the expression of complex therapeutic proteins.
  • Engineer mammalian cell lines using brand-new techniques like random integration, targeted integration, and gene editing (e.g., CRISPR-based systems).
  • Develop mammalian expression vectors using brand-new assembly techniques.
  • Perform phenotypic characterisation of edited cell lines with relevant assays (e.g., NGS, ddPCR, qPCR, and flow cytometry) and cell culture techniques (e.g., shake flask/bioreactor).
  • Collate, analyse, and evaluate data, ensuring the production of high-quality information and traceable records under the direction of the project lead.
  • Present results in written and oral reports.
  • Collaborate closely with other R&D groups to deliver improvements in recombinant protein expression, particularly with R&D Process Development, Protein Analytics & Informatics/Data Management.

Key requirements:

  • BSc/MSc Degree in Life Sciences, Molecular Biology, or a related field.
  • Practical experience within R&D in industrial or academic settings.
  • Strong technical background in molecular biology and cell culture, focusing on developing or manipulating mammalian expression systems (hosts, vectors, and processes).
  • Experience with cell line engineering, ideally with CRISPR-based systems. Experience with pooled and/or arrayed CRISPR-based screening is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with the implementation and development of automation for cell line screening.
  • Experience analysing next-generation sequencing data is advantageous.
  • Proven ability to contribute to technology development projects and successfully implement new technologies transferable from research to GMP manufacture.
  • Ability to work in cross-functional groups to transfer technology and support commercialisation.
  • Proactive attitude towards solving challenging problems.
  • Good working knowledge of statistics and expertise in the design of experiments.
