A key leadership position has come up in our team for a Medical Director for our Hungary & Adriatic’s Affiliates. This is a new role for AbbVie as we have recently created this Affiliate and it is a business critical and strategic role. The position reports into the Regional Medical Affairs Head and leads a large medical team (20+ people). Key internal partnerships are with the Affiliate GM, Affiliate Management team.

You will set and execute Medical Affairs strategies for the affiliates medical department and ensure the team contributes valuable input to Global Medical Affairs (GMA), Therapeutic Area strategic medical affairs plans, and local commercial plans.

What you will do

  • It will be critical that you can provide leadership to your team, creating a high performance, results oriented culture. Growing the capability of talent in your team is also key. You will set and execute Medical Affairs strategies for the affiliate along with providing strategic input into the affiliate’s commercial plans;
  • You will manage local clinical research plans and research activities in a scientific, efficient, and compliant way, and align with areas of strategic research interest for relevant products/therapeutic areas. Developing a ‘One R&D’ culture is important, by collaborating with and serving as a guide to CSM teams with ongoing trials in assigned countries. Ensuring all regulatory requirements are met, you will lead a successful Pharmacovigilance system and team;
  • Ensuring an effective promotional material review & approval process is key, whilst acting as signatory for promotional and scientific materials/activities (along with label changes). Establishing medical and scientific information services for AbbVie products and products in development is crucial, whilst ensuring that medical information is of high quality and is communicated in an accurate, balanced, and compliant way;
  • You will provide medical support for and help develop and maintain professional relationships with external experts and academic centers. Identifying appropriately qualified external local experts who would wish to engage in collaborative efforts is key, especially for potential research collaborations. You will also be accountable for the affiliate medical department budget;
  • Acting as the primary contact for medical governance requirements within the affiliate you will be accountable for understanding compliance requirements, risk identification and assessment, mitigation planning as well as the implementation and monitoring of appropriate internal controls;
  • You will serve as the company’s key medical spokesperson and primary medical representative with governmental agencies, professional associations, special interest groups and the healthcare community at large. Providing leadership of an analytical measurement approach to the medical in-field team and driving optimal Medical Affairs performance is important.

Your Capabilities and Qualifications

  • You will hold a Medical Degree (or have an equivalent scientific background) and a strong background in clinical practice. Previous medical affairs pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical industry experience is essential, along with management experience of significant numbers of medical/scientific staff;
  • An understanding of drug development and commercialization processes is important, as is having a sound knowledge of the regulatory environment, including experience in conducting safe clinical trials. You must be able to plan, manage and execute budgets effectively. A collaborative, team-oriented approach is needed, and you will be adept at developing and supporting relationships, networking across internal and external channels;
  • Possessing the ability to lead with confidence, you should be a motivator of people with the ability to impart the vision and strategy of the company and of the department to others. You must have a reputation for leading with high integrity, strong work ethics and compliant behavior. You will also have sound judgment, strong planning and organizational skills, and the ability to get things done;
  • Business orientation and acumen is desirable. You will have the demonstrated ability to participate within an executive team and contribute to the development and implementation of winning strategies for the company overall. Having a results oriented entrepreneurial spirit is key along with excellent judgment and the ability to operate independently;
  • You should possess the presence and credibility to establish and maintain productive relationships with a variety of audiences. Being a fluent speaker in either Croatian, Hungarian, or Slovenian is essential.
