In Early Stage Process Development, we develop processes to supply drugs for toxicological studies and for early stage clinical trials. In this team, you have the opportunity not only to develop and apply state-of-the-art technologies focusing on upstream development for NBEs, you also have the chance to drive innovation projects, contribute to strategic initiatives and be involved with teams who are bringing innovative drugs to patients.

As head of Early Stage Upstream Process Development, you work in a dynamic and well-equipped environment where you have the opportunity to drive innovation and whilst being supported to maintain an industry leading position in the areas you feel are most important to process development.

We are offering the exciting opportunity to join our Early Stage Process Development group, located in Biberach, Germany, the company’s largest Research & Development site.

Tasks & responsibilities

  • In your new role, you lead and develop a highly motivated team of PhDs, engineers, and laboratory technicians;
  • You are responsible for the development and up-scaling of economic and robust upstream processes for New Biological Entities (NBEs) for the early clinical development phase;
  • You contribute to our portfolio by actively participating in Research & Development projects as well as by leading a CMC sub-team;
  • You are responsible for driving innovation projects to foster state-of-the-art upstream process technologies to enable a reliable supply of clinical studies and a robust process for transfer into pilot- and commercial scales;
  • Through your scientific expertise, you undertake the continuous evaluation of development- and manufacturing concepts to reduce timelines, increase productivity and improve product quality.


  • Ph.D. in biochemistry, chemistry, or biotechnology with relevant post-doc experience or master´s degree with long-term relevant professional experience in an international environment;
  • Expert knowledge and relevant experience in industrial upstream process development, scale-up and transfer;
  • Experience in leading staff in an international setting;
  • Self-driven and in search of ongoing improvement of performance and quality to create sustainable added value;
  • Team player with excellent sense of responsibility, high competency in people management and a high intrinsic motivation for drug development;
  • Excellent communication skills as well as fluency in spoken and written English are mandatory, good language skills in German and the willingness to improve that further is advantageous.
