The Sr. Medical Director Germany will lead all medical affairs functions in Germany with presently 8 employees. This position requires a mature personality with excellent strategic and tactical leadership and interpersonal skills able to interact with multiple stakeholders, both internal and external, on a variety of levels and issues and build relationships of credibility and trust.

The incumbent will become a standing member on strategic teams including the Germany country management team headed by the General Manager and the CEMEA Medical Leadership team headed by the VP, CEMEA Medical Affairs.

Summary of Key Responsibilities

  • The Senior Medical Director is accountable for the review and implementation of the long and short-term business strategies to optimize markets for future and current products and development of rational strategic and operational plans for Germany (like MAC plan) in close alignment with commercial and market access. This includes the management and accountability for the country medical budgets.
  • As a senior leader the incumbent supports/implements the constant shaping and development of the German organization in close collaboration with the GM and the German Management Team according to the market, customer and portfolio needs.
  • This includes coaching of the medical team members and ensures appropriate development activities are planned and implemented.
  • Provides input into the global clinical research strategy and enables Phase IV clinical research like registries for launch and licensed products.
  • Gives guidance on timelines for studies in accordance with overall Program priorities, strategic goals and ensure adherence.
  • Represents Medical Affairs in the pricing and reimbursement process (AMNOG) in close collaboration with market access and the GM.
  • Drives/coordinates country specific lighthouse projects (i.e. center of excellence, patient finding projects, home nursing etc.).
  • Shares medical/clinical expertise and strategically supports his/her counterparts in other functional areas such as Commercial, Market Access, Patient advocacy, Clinical Development, Finance, Compliance and Legal.
  • Ensures the presence of appropriate scientific team members at national and international meetings and other academic activities.
  • Ensures values and strategic imperatives of the company and of Medical Affairs are well understood and applied through the Medical community.
  • Contributes to the training, leadership, and continuing education for commercial and medical affairs departmental staff.
  • Gives leadership to the German Country medical team about liaison with medical organizations and opinion leaders, e.g. clinical investigators or scientific consultants.

Qualifications and experiences

  • M.D. (Medical Doctor) and/or PhD and/or Equally qualified academic healthcare professional with proven leadership experience in Pharmaceutical or Biotechnology industry. Degree in medical/natural science (M.D., PhD) is preferred.
  • Demonstrated mature industry experience including leadership roles with proven project, business, and people management experience.
  • Strategic thinker with excellent problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Resilient self-starter, who can act independently and learn quickly.
  • Team builder, capable of interacting effectively with external contacts and at every level within the company.
  • Broad understanding of the regulatory environment in the Country and Region.
  • Extensive cross-functional project leadership experience married to an ability to operate effectively in a complex matrix organization.
  • Track record in the effective management of third-party suppliers and external consultants.
  • Perceptive, creative person with the ability to contribute new ideas and to build consensus.
  • Outstanding leadership skills, effective in marshalling support across an organization.
  • Business acumen, demonstrating a desire and drive to work in a fast-growing environment on the way to create a self-sustainable company.
  • Passion and enthusiasm for clinical development, demonstrating a commitment to maintaining standards at the highest possible level.
  • Able to represent Alnylam to key external stakeholders and potential future partners.
  • Able to manage complex decisions with excellent prioritization skills.
  • Empathetic style with the ability to enthuse and motivate others to action.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, in particular in English, as evidenced by a record of publications and/or public speaking.
