Ares Genetics (ARES) is a Vienna based digital diagnostics start-up that develops and commercializes next generation solutions for the diagnosis and therapy of infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). ARES builds on ARESdb, likely the world’s most comprehensive proprietary databases on the genetics of AMR and its ARES Technology Platform, a unique artificial intelligence powered bioinformatics AMR platform.

For the further development of ARESupa, a Universal Pathogenome Assay for rapid diagnosis of infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistances based on next generation sequencing, we are currently searching for a (Senior) Scientist - NGS Application Development (m/f/d) for a staff function role in unlimited full-time employment. The position reports to the Head of the NGS Laboratory.

What we expect from you...

In your role as NGS development scientist you will coordinate further development and productization of NGS applications for infectious disease diagnostics. This position requires conceptual planning and hands-on lab work alike. You will be responsible for assay development, improvement and validation, ensuring that state of the art methodology is employed to meet high quality expectations of customers.

Your responsibilities...

  • Plan, oversee and execute NGS application development projects using diverse, targeted and metagenomic state-of-the-art NGS applications, Nanopore sequencing as well as common molecular biological and microbiological techniques;
  • Develop new assays for culture free antimicrobial resistance diagnostics as well as optimize existing methods in a structured, professional and timely manner;
  • Work with various infectious materials under BSL-2 conditions;
  • Stay on top of state-of-the-art technologies and new developments in the field of clinical infectious disease testing;
  • Report results to various internal and external stakeholders. You will work in close cooperation with colleagues from the bioinformatics department as well as partners in the diagnostics industry, hospitals and academic research groups;
  • Use related technologies such as FACS, microscopy, etc. as needed.

What you bring with you…

  • PhD or equivalent professional expertise in Microbiology, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology or Biochemistry;
  • Strong track record in the field of assay development, genomics and microbiology, ideally 5+ years professional experience preferably in a diagnostics industry lab or top performing lab in academia;
  • Hands-on experience in NGS and Molecular Biology, RT-PCR qPCR, Sequencing and related work;
  • Proven technical troubleshooting and problem solving abilities;
  • Ability to implement quality standards and process improvements;
  • Excellent project management, human relations and communication skills;
  • Proven ability to cope with a dynamic work environment;
  • Business-fluent knowledge of written and spoken English. Knowledge of German is an advantage, but not a requirement;
  • Solid user of MS-Office applications;
  • Self-starter mentality, well organized and proactive work style;
  • Team spirit and ability to work in a fast-paced environment;
  • Knowledge of relevant quality and regulatory requirements, such as ISO 15189, ISO 13485, EU-IVD-R, FDA 21 CFR 820 is a plus.

The salary package for this position starts at gross € 55,000/year. Our salaries are nonetheless oriented towards market-based salaries depending on your relevant professional expertise and may be significantly higher.
