Research Scientist - High Throughput Biology Research

Boehringer Ingelheim

Biberach, Germany

At Boehringer Ingelheim we develop breakthrough therapies and innovative healthcare solutions in areas of unmet medical need for both humans and animals. As a family owned company, we focus on long-term performance. We believe that, if we have talented and ambitious people who are passionate about innovation, there is no limit to what we can achieve; after all, we started with just 28 people. Now, we are powered by 50,000 employees globally who nurture a diverse, collaborative and inclusive culture.

A lot to do despite Corona! Boehringer Ingelheim is still looking for new colleagues!

The main reason for failure of late stage drug development programs is lack of efficacy. One goal of our High Throughput Biology Group is the development of more physiologically relevant label-free assays, which will lay the foundation already at the earliest stages of drug discovery for higher success rates of novel therapies.

In your new role within our Drug Discovery Sciences research department you are part of a highly innovative High Throughput Biology group. This group is responsible for in vitro assay development to enable hit finding and optimization for the BI therapeutic departments in Biberach (Germany), Ridgefield (USA) and Vienna (Austria). With your expert knowledge in in vitro pharmacology and mass spectrometry, you provide a valuable contribution to the research of Boehringer Ingelheim to identify new drugs with substantial benefit for patients.

If you are looking for a new professional challenge and want to leverage your scientific career and publication record in the field of pharma-orientated scientific projects, apply for our new position at our Research site in Biberach.

Tasks & responsibilities

  • As Research Scientist, you work in close collaboration with research teams of pharmacologists and medicinal chemists to develop novel physiologically relevant biochemical and cellular assays, suitable for high throughput screening;
  • To establish efficient hit-finding and optimization strategies, you drive the scientific and technological development of in vitro model systems, novel innovative assay readouts incl. label-free technologies and the integration of complex in vitro pharmacology data;
  • You improve existing assay platforms (e.g. AlphaScreen, TR-FRET, FP, TSA, ITC, and specifically label-free technologies like MALDI-TOF-MS, LC-ESI-MS, AEMS/ADE-OPI-MS) and laboratory automation workflows (e.g. acoustic dispensing, fully automated robot systems);
  • The interpretation and presentation of results to line management and research project teams are integral part of your tasks;
  • While interacting as a label-free assay expert you have an excellent overview of scientific literature and actively expand our scientific network with relevant academic groups in the field;
  • You capture relevant emerging scientific and technological developments, in addition you will manage and lead academic staff.

  • PhD in biology, biochemistry, pharmacy, chemistry or equivalent qualification;
  • Background in biochemistry, molecular biology and cell biology with sound in vitro pharmacology knowledge;
  • Strong hands-on experience in mass spectrometry (MALDI, LC-ESI-MS, AEMS/ADE-OPI-MS) and sample preparation techniques (e.g. SPE, LLE), ideally for small and large molecules;
  • Expertise in biochemical and cellular assay development using high throughput adaptable technologies;
  • Experience in data analysis of quantitative in vitro pharmacological data (e.g. in-depth enzyme kinetic characterization, KNIME) and outstanding analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Team player with spirit for innovative solutions and excellent communication skills in English. A basic command in German is a plus.

We will continue to hire talented people and we look forward to receiving your applications. As a result of COVID-19, we have introduced alternative working arrangements to ensure that our employees can stay safe and healthy, because the health of our employees is among our top priorities.
